Pressure and suction transmissions

Suction line – an essential part of any pump installation

A suction line connects the fluid source – such as a well, tank or pit – to the pump inlet. It is used on the suction side of the pump where there is no natural pressure on the system. It places special demands on materials, joints and installation as negative pressure can cause poor lines to collapse or draw in air.

Suction lines are used in both temporary and permanent pumping solutions and should be selected based on the medium, length, head and pump type.

Technical function

When the pump creates negative pressure, it draws liquid in through the suction line. Therefore, the line must be:

  • Airtight and vacuum-tight

  • Pressure stable – must not collapse under negative pressure

  • No leaks or leaky couplings that can cause air pockets and cavitation

For long stretches or high lift heights, a suction damper, foot valve or anchoring may be needed to ensure consistent and efficient suction performance.

Benefits and advantages

  • Efficient and stable pumping without air in the system

  • Reduces risk of cavitation and downtime

  • Easy installation with quick couplers

  • Flexible adaptation to terrain and access conditions

  • Can be combined with filters and valves for better pump protection

Typical applications

  • Bypass pumping of wastewater during pipe renovation

  • Drainage of basements and construction pits

  • Groundwater lowering and sludge emptying

  • Industrial liquid handling from tanks or containers

  • Temporary pumping solutions in case of accidents or breakdowns

Materials

Suction cords are available in many versions depending on the application:

  • Materials:

    • Heavy-duty PVC or PU hoses (lightweight and flexible)

    • Rubber hoses (high durability and vacuum resistant)

    • Reinforced hoses (resists collapsing under suction)

  • Sizes:

    • Typically 3″-12″, but can be adapted to larger flows

    • Can be cut or extended as needed

  • Accessories:

    • Foot valves and suction filters

    • Bauer, Camlock or flange couplings

    • Anchors, bends and reducers
