Submersible pump – efficient and compact solution for drainage and wastewater

A submersible pump is an electric pump designed to be submerged in liquid – typically dirty or clean water. Once the pump is placed in the liquid, it pumps the water up through a connected discharge pipe.

Submersible pumps are often used when space is limited or when the pump needs to be as close as possible to the liquid to avoid loss in head. This makes it an obvious choice for basements, sump pumps, wells and construction sites where fast drainage is needed.

Technical function

A submersible pump works by using an electric motor that drives an impeller, which creates pressure and pumps up the liquid. The pump is tightly sealed so it can operate underwater without short-circuiting.

Submersible pumps are not self-priming – they need to be fully or partially submerged in the liquid to operate. They are available both with and without a level switch (float) so they automatically start and stop depending on the liquid level.

Advantages of submersible pumps

  • Efficient and space-saving – ideal for tight spaces

  • Can handle both clean and unclean water

  • Low noise level and no exhaust as the motor is electric

  • Suitable for continuous operation, e.g. in pump sumps or tanks

  • Climate-friendly operations – especially relevant where CO₂ emissions need to be minimized

Typical applications

  • Drainage of construction sites and basements

  • Pumping rainwater, groundwater and wastewater

  • Temporary solutions for flooding

  • Use in pump sumps and wells

  • Industry and municipal technical installations

Materials and variants

Submersible pumps are available in many versions and materials, depending on the application:

  • Materials: Stainless steel, plastic, cast iron – depending on the aggressiveness of the medium

  • Variants:

    • With or without float (level control)

    • Pumps with grinder for solid particles

    • High pressure models for higher lift heights

    • Explosion-proof models for ATEX areas
