Self-priming pump – efficient and flexible pump for mobile and temporary applications

A self-priming pump is a pump that can start its operation without first filling the suction hose with liquid. This makes it particularly suitable for temporary installations, construction sites, and areas without permanent access to water supply.

The pump sucks air out of the hose until the water reaches the pump housing – then it continues with normal operation. This makes it easy to operate and quick to use.

Technical function

Self-priming pumps are often based on the centrifugal principle, but have a special design that allows air discharge and liquid suction. They can typically lift water from a depth of 7-8 meters, depending on piping and conditions.

Advantages of self-priming pumps

  • Easy start-up – no manual filling required.
  • Mobile and flexible – ideal for portable use.
  • Reliable – built for demanding environments.
  • Time-saving – quick installation and commissioning.

Typical applications

  • Construction and civil engineering
  • Bypass pumping for sewer repairs
  • Flood drainage
  • Emptying tanks and containers
  • Agricultural tasks and irrigation

Materials and variations

Self-priming pumps are available in different materials:

  • Cast iron (robust and economical)
  • Stainless steel (corrosion resistant)
  • Plastic (chemical resistant)

Drive types:

  • Diesel or gasoline engine – for mobile use without electricity
  • Electrically powered – for stationary installations
