Flushing – efficient cleaning and flushing of piping systems and lines

Flushing is a technical process that uses controlled pressure and flow to flush a piping system to remove unwanted materials such as sand, sludge, biofilm or chemical residues. It is used both as preventive maintenance and as an emergency intervention when a system is partially clogged or subdivided.

Flushing is widely used in everything from sewers and wastewater networks to district heating and industrial systems – and plays an important role in ensuring reliability and flow capacity.

Technical function

Flushing uses a pump – often a high-flow motor pump – to send large volumes of fluid (typically water) through the desired system. It is often combined with:

  • Pressure variations that loosen deposits

  • Pulsating flow to break built-up material

  • Chemical agents when needed, e.g. in industrial facilities

  • Hose reels or flushing heads for targeted cleaning

Flushing should be planned based on pipe dimensions, length, material and media so that it does not damage the system or create backlash.

Benefits and advantages

  • Effective cleaning without mechanical intervention

  • Extends the lifespan of pipes and wires

  • Ensures proper flow and reduces downtime

  • Environmentally friendly method – often with clean water only

  • Can be done quickly and without major disruptions

Typical applications

  • Preparing for TV inspection or repair

  • Maintenance of sewer and drainage systems

  • Cleaning overpumping lines and temporary piping

  • Flushing of industrial pipes, tanks and process lines

  • Emptying and cleaning of wells and basins
