Bypass pumping – effective temporary solution for downtime and renovation

Bypass pumping is the term for a temporary pumping installation that ensures the continuous transportation of liquid from one location to another when normal operations are interrupted. It is especially used for sewer work where wastewater needs to be diverted around the affected area for a period of time in order to work safely and without overflow or contamination.

The solution can be tailored to the conditions – whether it’s a few meters of piping or complex installations with large flow volumes and long distances.

Technical function

Bypass pumping typically involves:

  • One or more portable pumps (diesel, motor or electric pumps)

  • Suction and pressure lines with adaptations to existing system

  • Level or flow control for automatic on/off or variable operation

  • Hoses or piping fitted with couplings, dampers and shut-offs

The pumping solution will be installed temporarily and taken down again when permanent operation is restored.

Benefits of bypass pumping

  • Ensures uninterrupted operation during construction work

  • Prevents flooding and environmental damage

  • Can be set up quickly and flexibly – even in emergency situations

  • Adapts to flow, distance and terrain

  • Less inconvenience for citizens and surroundings as operations are maintained

Typical applications

  • Sewer renovation and TV inspection

  • Replacing manholes and pipes

  • Maintenance of pumping stations

  • Acute outages or line breaks

  • Industrial changeover or process shutdown

Materials and variants

Overpumping solutions are composed of different components depending on the task at hand:

  • Pumps: Diesel pumps, motor pumps or electric pumps with adapted capacity

  • Hoses and pipes: PE pipes, rubber hoses, PVC pressure lines with camlock or Bauer couplings

  • Accessories: Dampers, valves, sound insulation, floating bridges, power management and monitoring

  • Installation: Temporary transitions to existing pipes – possibly with suction wells or flow meters
